Making the First Week of School Easier: A Settling-In Guide
Quick answer
Tears at the gate are normal. These simple habits help toddlers and parents feel calm and confident during the first days of preschool.
Table of contents (4 sections)
The first week of preschool is a big change for the whole family. A few tears are normal and usually short-lived. Here is what helps most, from teachers who have welcomed hundreds of little ones.
Before school starts
- Visit the school together and walk past it on your evening walks.
- Read picture books about going to school.
- Practise short separations with a trusted adult.
- Shift wake-up and breakfast times a week in advance.
At drop-off
Keep goodbyes short, warm and consistent: a hug, a smile and "I'll pick you up after snack time." Sneaking away can make children more anxious the next day. Hand over to the teacher and leave confidently.
At pick-up
Be on time, especially in the first weeks. Ask specific questions — "What did you paint today?" — rather than "How was school?"
At home
Expect a little extra tiredness or clinginess. Early bedtimes, calm evenings and lots of cuddles help children process the new experience.
Most children settle within two to three weeks. If you are worried, talk to the class teacher — we are on the same team.
